PROGRAM MANAGER'S NOTE
Access Certification: An IBM Lotus Review

As we struggle to find answers to our questions, it is easy to forget the myriad of information at our fingertips. Many of us are experiencing information overload, and the idea of going out and seeking more can be daunting. That is why IBM Certification for Lotus Software does a lot of this work for you and maintains current, fresh, and timely information on our various Web sites. Data is gathered relevant to the program -- so you don't have to worry about collecting it -- and then presented in an easy to find, logical manner.

Merging our Lotus Certification page onto the IBM Certification site last year enabled us to streamline and standardize our content. If you haven't taken a look lately, you might be pleasantly surprised. Information on discounts and promotions, events, and - of course - Lotus Technical Certifications can be accessed from the main page at http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/certs/lt_index.shtml .

Further, a new module was added entitled "Why Certify," which is a repository for presentations and articles extolling the value of professional certification.

The IBM Certified Professional private site is a one stop shop for all IBM Certification-related information and activities. Manage your certifications, merge your candidate Ids, and post to - or respond to posts on - the Certified Professional forum. Brand specific pages offer even more information, which enables you to stay ahead of the curve. On the Lotus pages, for instance, we have event listings, upcoming exam and course information, and technical resources. If you are interested in contributing to our wikis, the links can be found on this page. Similarly, we have new technical resources available for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5, which can help you ramp up and prepare to upgrade your certifications.

So take the time to view the public pages, private sites, and wikis. Bookmark them and refer to them on a regular basis, not just to stay informed about all aspects of Lotus Certification, but to stay in the loop about Lotus events, products, and resources.

INTEGRATE SHAREPOINT WITH LOTUS NOTES

Achieve Your Collaboration Objectives While Managing Expenses

Don't miss our April Virtual User Group Meeting. The meeting will feature a special online presentation, hosted by LotusUserGroup.org and presented by Yaacov Cohen, president and CEO, Mainsoft, and Jonas Martinsson, product manager, Mainsoft.

To help IBM customers succeed in today's challenging economy, Mainsoft offers Lotus Notes and Domino customers, who have adopted Microsoft SharePoint, the opportunity to integrate the two platforms and promote team collaboration. Strategic coexistence based on Mainsoft SharePoint Integrator for Lotus Notes is 1/10th the cost of a typical migration strategy.

During the virtual meeting, Yaacov will present common use cases for integrating SharePoint and Lotus Notes, including remote document authoring and archiving Lotus Notes emails on SharePoint.

Jonas will demo Mainsoft SharePoint Integrator for Lotus Notes software, which enables users to access, modify, and publish Lotus Notes emails and attachments on SharePoint from a Lotus Notes sidebar. He will also preview support for Lotus Notes 8.5, including the integration of SharePoint events in the Lotus Notes calendar and business mashups that integrate data and business logic from Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino, Java, and SharePoint.

The presentation is free for LotusUserGroup.org members but requires pre-registration. Register today at http://www.LotusUserGroup.org/VUG

LAST GEEK STANDING AND LOTUS JAM

Part of the excitement of THE VIEW's Admin2009 and Lotus Developer2009 conferences is the BlackBerry Evening of Entertainment. This year, the fun comes in two parts -- Last Geek Standing and Lotus Jam.

Last Geek Standing
Join us for this live, entertaining game show, hosted by a special guest moderator (to be revealed at a later date) and sponsored by BlackBerry. In this whirlwind of fun, two panels of contestants -- one of audience members and one of speakers from the conferences -- face-off against each other in a battle of knowledge. Panelists will have to answer questions, vote people off, place "life-line" calls, and complete other challenges culled from a variety of popular reality and games shows, all in a quest to win valuable prizes. Sign up today! The audience panel will be made up of volunteers from the attendees. All panelists will receive a prize, three finalists will win a special prize, and the winner will receive a grand prize from BlackBerry. As panelist spaces are limited, you have to apply in advance to play. To apply, simply fill out and submit the Last Geek Standing application form at http://www.LotusUserGroup.org/submissions.nsf/lastgeek?OpenForm .

Lotus Jam
Immediately following the Last Geek Standing game show, BlackBerry presents Lotus Jam, a live entertainment event featuring a local Boston area band, The PCI Compliants. The band will perform a number of crowd pleasing favorites and then open up the stage for a Jam session with the audience. If you sing or play guitar (or any kind of musical instrument) and want to get your 15 minutes of fame on stage, here's your chance. If you're attending the conference and you'd like to sit in with the band, email Josh Albright of the PCI Compliants at mailto:pcicompliants@gmail.com?subject=Lotus_Jam_at_Admin/Dev_Boston . Josh will get in touch to make arrangements.

UKLUG 2009 ANNOUNCED

The UK Lotus User Group (UKLUG) event is back for 2009 - on October 8th and 9th in Edinburgh.

The UKLUG event is one of the largest Lotus gatherings in the UK and provides many opportunities to network over the two days. Many attendees even extend those networking opportunities by staying on for the weekend in Edinburgh.

The conference offers a wide range of technical sessions on the latest developments -- such as Notes and Domino 8.5, Sametime Advanced, and Lotus Quickr 8.5 -- presented by some of the leading speakers in the Lotus community. Many of the best names in Lotus tools, services, and products are also available to help you make the most out of your existing Lotus infrastructure.

Another benefit of this year's UKLUG event is the location. Edinburgh has one of the most beautiful skylines in Europe and more history than you can shake a kilt at. The venue is the Radisson SAS Hotel. In fine Scottish Baronial style, it stands on the Royal Mile in the ancient heart of the city, and just a short walk from Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station. Surrounded by lively bars and restaurants, the famous castle is just up the hill. For more information about the venue, visit http://www.edinburgh.radissonsas.com .

As always, UKLUG is a free event to attend, but you must register in advance. Head on over to http://www.uklug.info for all the details about the event.

USING FORMULA LANGUAGE INSIDE OF LOTUSSCRIPT
by Julian Robichaux, SNAPPS and http://www.nsftools.com

I do almost all of my day-to-day Lotus Notes programming in LotusScript. There's also some Java and very little Formula language, but for the most part, the code I put inside of Lotus Notes databases is LotusScript. It is stable and fast, and there are generally very few hacks I have to include to get things done.

However, there are always a few things that are much easier to accomplish in other languages. In LotusScript, you can call out to Formula with Evaluate() and call out to Java using LS2J. Here are some very handy Formula functions you can use within your LotusScript to make coding easier.

Handy Formula Functions

@UrlDecode
When you're getting the contents of a query string back from a URL in an agent, @URLDecode is the best way to decode the special characters in the query string. For example:

Dim session As New NotesSession
Set doc = session.DocumentContext
qArray = Split(doc.Query_String(0), "&")
Forall stuff In qArray
decodeVal = Evaluate( |@URLDecode("Domino";"| & stuff & |")| )
qParams( Trim(Strleft(decodeVal(0), "=")) ) = Strright(decodeVal(0), "=")
End Forall

Likewise, you can use @URLEncode to prepare your own query strings.

@DBColumn and @DBLookup
For quick lookups on small views, such as generating a keyword list, @DBColumn and @DBLookup are simple one-line ways to get the information you need. For instance:

Dim workspace As New NotesUIWorkspace
Dim response As Variant, things As Variant
things = Evaluate( |@Unique(@DbColumn(""; ""; "ThingLookup"; 1))| )
response = workspace.Prompt (PROMPT_OKCANCELLIST, _
"Select a Thing", "Select a thing from the list below.", _
things(0), things)

Obviously, you still have the same 32K data limitations for returned values that you have with "regular" Formula language, so make sure the lookups aren't too big.

@UserRoles
I'm not even sure that there is an equivalent method to @UserRoles in LotusScript. If there is, it's certainly not as simple as using the @UserRoles function directly to get the access control list roles that the current user has in the current database. You can use it either by itself to return an array of roles or with other functions to further limit the results. For example:

Dim isAdmin As Variant
isAdmin = Evaluate( |@IsMember("[Administrators]"; @UserRoles)| )
If (isAdmin(0) = False) Then
Messagebox "Not authorized to run this agent"
Exit Sub
End If

@UserNamesList is a similar and useful function.

@MailDbName
To easily get the current user's mail server and mail database name, use @MailDbName. I think this function queries the current Location document for information, so it's only useful for Notes client applications. However, it's a good shortcut on the client. For instance:

Dim mailDbInfo As Variant
mailDbInfo = Evaluate( |@MailDbName| )
If (mailDbInfo(0) = "") Then
Messagebox "You are using a local mail replica"
End If

@ConfigFile
There is a C-API function to get the name and path of the current Notes.ini file, but it's SO much easier to use @ConfigFile instead. For example:

Dim notesIniFile As Variant
notesIniFile = Evaluate( |@ConfigFile| )
Messagebox "Your Notes.ini file is: " & notesIniFile(0)

@FileDir
Along those lines, @FileDir is also a useful shortcut. It returns the directory part of a file path. This can save you a few if/then blocks full of manual parsing methods. For instance:

Dim notesIniPath As Variant
notesIniPath = Evaluate( |@FileDir(@ConfigFile)| )
Messagebox "Notes.ini is in directory:" & notesIniPath(0)

In the example above, I coupled it with @ConfigFile, but you can easily pass in your own strings too.

@AttachmentNames
You can use @AttachmentNames to get a list of all files attached to a Notes document, both within rich text fields and attached directly to the document. Not only is this a good way to see all attachments at once (or determine if there are attachments), but it's also a nice shortcut when you need to extract files. For example:

Dim attachments As Variant
attachments = Evaluate( |@AttachmentNames|, doc )
Forall fileName In attachments
Call doc.GetAttachment(fileName).ExtractFile( "c:\" & fileName )
End Forall

You can also couple the array returned from @AttachmentNames with those returned from @AttachmentLengths and @AttachmentModifiedTimes to report information about the files attached to a given document.

@Sort
There are plenty of examples on the Internet of sorting algorithms for arrays. (See Appendix B of the Redbook "Performance Considerations for Domino Applications" at http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg245602.pdf for LotusScript-specific examples.) However, sometimes you just have a small array of text strings that you want to sort without much hassle. In these cases, you can make a simple call to @Sort and be done with it. For instance:

Dim myArray(2) As String, arrayString As String
Dim sortedArray As Variant
myArray(0) = "zoo"
myArray(1) = "aquarium"
myArray(2) = "playground"
arrayString = Replace(Join(myArray, "~"), |"|, |\"|)
sortedArray = Evaluate( |@Sort(@Explode("| & arrayString & |"; "~"))| )

As always, make sure the total amount of data you're sorting is less than 32K in length. If you have more data than that, you'll have to use one of the standard algorithms. Oh, and please do use a standard algorithm (such as QuickSort or MergeSort) if you have to do any real sorting entirely in LotusScript. If you try to write your own algorithm, you'll not only waste your time, but you'll also inevitably write some variation of Bubble sort which is MUCH slower than something like QuickSort.

@RegQueryValue
On Windows machines, you can easily get String-type registry values (REG_SZ entries) using @RegQueryValue. For example:

Dim skypePath As Variant
skypePath = Evaluate( |@RegQueryValue("HKEY_CCURRENT_USER";
"Software\\Skype\\Phone"; "SkypePath")| )
If (skypePath(0) = "") Then
Messagebox "Skype is not installed"
End If

Unfortunately, this method does NOT work for binary data in the registry (like REG_EXPAND_SZ values, which look like strings in RegEdit but they're stored as binary). However, for binary values, you can usually do something like this:

Dim wscript As Variant
Set wscript = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Print "Your default text editor is: " & _
wscript.RegRead("HKCR\txtfile\Shell\Open\Command\")

Things to Watch Out For

Here are a few things to watch out for when you use the Evaluate() statement to run Formula language functions:

* @Commands and user interface functions (such as @Prompt) don't work.
* Return values are always arrays, even if only a single value is returned.
* String values that you pass in or get back must be less than 32K in length.
* Quotation marks (") and backslashes (\) must be escaped as \" and \\ when they're passed in as part of a string value. You can usually use the LotusScript Replace function to do the search and replace.
* You must make sure that any string value you pass in is surrounded by quotation marks.
* Because you use quotation marks pretty frequently with @Functions, it's often a good idea to use a pipe character (|) as a LotusScript string delimiter for the Formula instead of quotes. For example:
Evaluate( |@IsMember("[Administrators]"; @UserRoles)| )
* You are allowed to use linefeeds in the Formula string to make it more readable, but this only works if you're using pipes (|) or curly braces ({}) as a string delimiter.
* If you are running a formula against a specific NotesDocument reference, make sure to include the document as the optional second parameter of Evaluate(), like in the @AttachmentNames example above.
* If you have improper syntax in your Formula, a LotusScript error will be triggered, so make sure you have good error handling.

DELIVERING MOBILE CONTENT USING WEMP AND WCM 6.0

This document on developing content using WEMP and WCM 6.0 was written by Kiran Rao and Jaye Fitzgerald and was posted on the WebSphere Portal wiki.

Synopsis:
WCM provides a means of creating, updating, managing, and presenting Web content. It has been integrated with WebSphere Portal to allow management and presentation through portlets. Though many features of WCM are very specific to HTML, with some minor updates and careful use of the features, it is possible to extend this capability so that WCM can be used to present content not only using HTML, but other markups such as the XML Device Independent Markup Extensions (XDIME). This means that WCM can be used to generate not only HTML portlet content intended for display on PCs, but also XDIME content, which can be used by WEMP for display on mobile devices. With careful planning, it is possible, and advantageous, to create one instance of content which can be presented as both HTML and XDIME using different presentation templates. This means that only one copy of the content needs to be created and maintained to support both PCs and Mobile devices.

This document describes steps required to extend the Showcase News portlet to provide presentations to mobile devices through WEMP. To learn more, visit http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/portalwiki.nsf/dx/12022008074619AMWEBGYZ.htm

More detailed information on the Early Enablement program can be found on the IBM Certified Instructor for Lotus Software private site. While there, check out the new Notes and Domino 8.5 link to enablement resources at the bottom of the page.

Remember that early enablement on these courses gives you provisional authorization to teach, but in order to teach these courses indefinitely, you must be certified in System Administration 8.5. Detailed information on the Certification Paths for IBM Lotus Domino 8.5 can be found on the Lotus Certification pages.
