  PROGRAM MANAGER'S NOTE

This fall, the IBM Software Group Certification Program Managers gathered and analyzed test prices from major companies offering IT certifications. As a result of this comparison, a decision was made to increase prices in 2009 in order to remain in line with the market value. This increase affects all Software Group brands.

Lotus is doing away with tiered exam pricing for developed markets; all our exams, regardless of length, will cost US$200 (or equivalent). This represents an increase of 0-25%. In growth markets, exams will cost US$100 (or equivalent), which is an increase of 20%. The new pricing structure takes effect January 1, 2009.

Lotus Education is keeping the cost of exams at $75 each for Lotusphere 2009, the same price we have had for several years. This is a significant savings of over 50% off the regular retail price. If you are planning to attend Lotusphere, ensure you schedule some time to get up to date on your certifications.

If you cannot attend Lotusphere, consider attending one of our many technical conferences held in various regions throughout the world. Certification always has a presence at these conferences and, next year, attendees will be able to take their first exam free and their second exam at a deep discount of 50%.

Bookmark the Lotus Certification Public and Private Sites so you can stay informed on any new promotions and discounts being offered. There is an array of programs offered through Partnerworld, such as You Test, We Pay and You Pass, We Pay, to help business partners keep up to date on the latest product technologies and certifications.

Thank you,
Sara Nicklin

BIG CHANGES AT THE VIEW MEAN MORE ARTICLES ON MORE TOPICS MORE OFTEN

THE VIEW — the longest-running technical journal for IT professionals working with IBM Lotus Notes and Domino — just tripled the amount of articles it publishes and added a new website. Users see more content published on Lotus Notes and Domino related projects, as well as new articles that cover IBM's Unified Communications and Collaboration (UC2) product family — including Sametime, Quickr, and Connections. Plus, it's all getting published on a weekly basis. See the complete story on LotusUserGroup.org.

AVAYA AND MAINSOFT WHITE PAPERS ON LOTUSUSERGROUP.ORG

If you have not seen them yet, there are two white papers in our archive that you may want to check out today.

Avaya
Read up on how Avaya and IBM are leveraging Avaya Intelligent Communications solutions across IBM Lotus platforms and applications to create a seamless communications environment. Such an environment will be of measurable benefit to the enterprise, to the individual within the enterprise, and ultimately to its customers. Combined applications increase productivity, are enterprise-ready by being reliable, scaleable and comprehensive, and connect instant messaging and telephony in existing Sametime and Domino environments.

Mainsoft
Mainsoft SharePoint Integrator for Lotus Notes is a client-side plug-in to Lotus Notes 8 that delivers instant access to SharePoint document libraries from a sidebar application in Notes. End users can navigate SharePoint document libraries; drag and drop documents between SharePoint and either Lotus Notes or the Sametime IM client; and modify existing documents within a Library using check-in and check-out from the Notes sidebar. Users can email documents as attachments or links. Mainsoft professional services offer custom integrations that solve additional interoperability use cases between SharePoint and Lotus Notes. These include incorporating Lotus Notes emails into a SharePoint-based enterprise content management strategy; building business mashups across SharePoint, Notes and Domino, and .NET and Java applications; and integrating SharePoint into the Sametime sidebar. With the release of Lotus Notes 8.5, SharePoint Integrator will also support the federation of personal and team calendars and deliver offline access to SharePoint documents.

JANUARY VIRTUAL USER GROUP MEETING ANNOUNCED

Don's miss the first LotusUserGroup.org virtual user group meeting of 2009. What is a Virtual User Group meeting? Think about all the things that a live user group meeting contains — a presentation, some time for networking and questions, and perhaps a snack. Well, we can't vouch for the snack, but we are providing the presentation and the networking. LotusUserGroup.org's Virtual User Group meetings include a Webcast presentation, followed up by a moderated discussion forum/chat the week of the meeting.

The January meeting is hosted on LotusUSerGroup.org and is presented by PSC Consulting group. It will include a presentation by John Head leading Lotus guru John Head and long time expert Alexander Kassabov. This live, online presentation will introduce you to some unique and time saving techniques for the integration of Lotus Notes and Domino with Microsoft Office, .NET technologies, and Lotus Symphony. No matter what version of Notes you're running (even 8.5) all the way back to 6.5, you'll come away with a solid plan for Mail Merge, exporting to a spreadsheet, charting, presentation building, and integration on the Web. You'll learn some advanced topics such as Visual Studio Tools for Office integration with Lotus Domino Web Services. Plus, we'll show you live demos on how to use Notes & Domino 8.5 to improve your integration options. Finally, we will touch on how the Integra for Notes reporting and integration framework can reduce your cost to provide your users with the reports they need to get their jobs done.

The presentation is free to LotusUserGroup.org members (and membership is free) but requires pre-registration. Please register today.

  GURU GUIDANCE

FOUR THINGS YOU THOUGHT YOU COULDN'T DO WITH NOTES RICH TEXT
by Julian Robichaux, SNAPPS and http://www.nsftools.com

Rich text fields in Lotus Notes are extremely flexible. They can contain formatted text, tables, images, files, and even buttons or hotspots with Formula and LotusScript code. However, they are also quite tricky to manipulate using code — the flexibility that is so easy to control when you enter information by hand seems difficult, if not impossible, to control programmatically.

LotusScript provides you with some built-in classes to help work with rich text: NotesRichTextNavigator, NotesRichTextStyle, NotesRichTextDoclink, and more. These classes are sometimes tedious to use and they still don't offer a full set of functionality for controlling rich text fields. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the Midas rich text tools that allow you to do things that you really can't do with native LotusScript.

I'm going to outline a few techniques that fall somewhere between "regular" LotusScript and the powerful Midas tools. These four tricks will give you a little more programmatic control over rich text than you may have thought possible.

TRICK #1: REFRESH RICH TEXT FIELDS DYNAMICALLY IN THE NOTES CLIENT

One of the first rich text limitations you might have noticed in the Notes client is that, by default, programmatic updates to rich text fields on Notes documents in edit mode are not immediately visible. To quote from the Domino Designer Help file (for NotesUIDocument.Reload):

"Modifications made to rich-text items on the back-end document do not appear on the current document until it is closed and reopened."

The first time I saw a technique for working around this was in an LDD Forum post by Bryce Berry from 2004.

I won't rehash the code here (you'll understand it after you've read through it once or twice), but it's a very interesting way to work around the back end refresh limitation. I've used it several times in the past for doing things like attaching files with a button.

TRICK #2: ADD TABLES PROGRAMMATICALLY

While it is possible to add tables with LotusScript using native classes, it takes a lot more effort than you might think. Here's a good example from Joe Litton.

Andre Guirard also demonstrated some interesting ways to add tables to rich text fields on his blog and in his ReportGenerator class on OpenNTF.org.
Dynamic Table
Report Generator Class with Tables

As with the previous example, I won't go through the code in detail here. I just want to point you in a few directions. You can decide which of the techniques works best for you.

TRICK #3: ADD INLINE IMAGES PROGRAMMATICALLY

While it's easy to attach image files to rich text fields as file attachments (NotesRichTextItem.EmbedObject), there's no native way to attach images as inline pictures using LotusScript. Once again, Andre Guirard comes to the rescue with an article in THE VIEW journal 2005.

Even if you don't have access to the full online knowledgebase at ww.eVIEW.com, you can still download the sample database from the article that has all the code. The database works as follows: The image file is added as a MIME part and displayed using HTML, and then the MIME is converted to rich text and appended to an existing rich text field. The code to attach an inline image is as easy as:

	Dim mh As New MimeHelper
Dim body As New NotesRichTextItem(doc, fieldName)
	Call body.AppendRTItem( mh.GrabImage(fileName, "") )
	Call body.Update

Take a look at the database from the article. It's very slick.

TRICK #4: ADD BUTTONS PROGRAMMATICALLY

You can also add a button to a rich text field using LotusScript. While you can copy an existing button from an existing rich text field with code, there's no native way to create a new button from scratch with LotusScript. Here's a technique I came up with.

This is a class that creates the new button as DXL, imports the DXL as a temporary document, and copies the button to an arbitrary rich text field. While that might sound like a lot of work, the code you need to write is something like this:

Dim rtbutton As New RichTextButton
Call rtbutton.SetLabel("Formula Button")
Call rtbutton.SetButtonLanguage(RTB_FORMULA)
Call rtbutton.SetCode( |@Prompt([ok]; "My Button"; "You clicked my button");| )
Set rtitem = doc.GetFirstItem("Body")
Call rtbutton.AppendButton(rtitem)

Also, you might be able to expand this code to create other things, since DXL can be used to create much more than just buttons.
