Last week was quite eventful in the world of Lotus software releases.
We'll start with the release of Lotus Symphony 1.1, which John Head reports that it contains new features such as Mail Merge in the contact database (this is a huge victory for end users), workspace customization, and a smaller memory footprint. He also reports that those looking for a Mac version can expect it around the same time as a Mac Notes 8.5 release. Moving on, Lotus also released the 8.0.2 Notes client. I'm currently running it now on my workstation. While I haven't seen the blazing fast startup speeds that others have, I've certainly noticed it's peppier switching locations and moving through tabs. (I support various servers at various sites, so I switch locations, which also switches IDs). Nathan Freeman wrote an article about a great reason why the behavior changed, and the real reason for the pep-factor. I did run into some problems in the install, but a quick uninstall/reinstall and everything was fine. This served as a lesson for me; Lotus releases are coming faster than they ever have, multiple beta versions are flying around, and multiple products are flying through upgrades. My machine at any given time is a "Frankenstation". I should ALWAYS do an uninstall/reinstall before upgrading to make sure I've refreshed every file, especially when it's most likely I'm already running beta code! After this, the Notes 8.5 Beta 2 client is out. A PlanetLotus.org quick browse-through will yield oodles of results, feedback, experiences, and reports on features (Xpages among them). Finally, Bruce Elgort links to a new podcast called The 1352 Report. In the first episode, Carl Tyler, Bruce Elgort, Sean Burgess and myself introduce ourselves, chat about Lotus marketing, why some shops delay upgrades, Notes 8.0.2 and more. Okay, I think that's it.
