| Intro |
|
Well, the news pretty much wrote itself before I even thought about this month's newsletter. The first piece of news is the Google Wave announcements and the second is the current wins that Lotus has gained over Microsoft. While my thoughts are always outside the yellow bubble on topics such as Google Wave, the new implications of what we'll be able to do are just beginning.
Google Wave has the momentum to be a central hub for communication and collaboration across sites on the Web. If you look closely, it compares to Activities in Lotus Connections, but for the entire Web and not just a silo. Google Wave allows you to comment, edit, and reply anywhere in a conversation or message. Transmission is live as you type, speeding up the sharing of thoughts and information. Its ability to edit rich media goes beyond what we know in Lotus Connections. A wave is defined as "equal parts document and communication" that people collaboratively work together on in a persistent manner.
This conceptually changes the way we work together on content found throughout the Web. Bring this together with the open application programming interface (API) to allow developers to tap into the wave — including data from the wave — and we could see an incredible increase in user productivity. Google Wave will be a product, protocol, and platform, much like Domino is today. I would suggest reading as much as you can on Google Wave and seeing what implications this will have on future collaboration inside your organizations.
Ed Brill posted a summary of two announcements concerning how the market is shifting from Microsoft to Lotus on many fronts. How many of you tell your customers to wait for the next release of your product before they buy or upgrade? How many of you admit that the current release of your product may not be the solution that every customer should have and they should wait longer to get newer functionality?
He highlights how Microsoft partners are flocking over to expand their services to include Lotus Foundations. Partners are upset that Microsoft is not growing the Small Business Server bundle satisfactorily in innovation and the addition of solutions. Lotus Foundations came with more capabilities in the first release due to the purchase of Nitix. However, Lotus rapidly expanded the capabilities and is pushing partners to develop more solutions. This makes a stronger selling point to businesses and beats Microsoft in every instance for which we have a customer comparison.
While you get ready to click links to read about Google Wave and how Lotus is beating Microsoft, scroll down to see my input on reverse proxies with iNotes, editing attachment issues in Notes 8.5, placing and accessing a personal NAB on the server in 8.5, and some battery utilization issues on mobile devices with Lotus Traveler 8.5.0.1.
You can always reach me in my VGS (Virtual Gratification Syndrome) world via Twitter, FriendFeed, Pownce, Facebook, Diigo, Tumblr, GTalk, AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, Sametime, Greenhouse, Paxos, BleedYellow, smoke signal, carrier pigeon, my podcasts, or my blog for your questions, comments, and ideas. Notice that voicemail isn't on that list? If those are not enough I can name another 200 ways.

| FROM THE IdoNotes MAILBOX: REVERSE PROXY AND iNOTES (DWA) 8.5 ISSUE |
|
QUESTION: Chris,
I have run into a situation in which an apache reverse proxy has broken after an 8.5 upgrade. When the forms85 is replaced by the forms6, it works again. We have looked at the debug logs on the proxy and at the domlogs and found everything works up to a point. It is redirected to the correct server, finds the mail file, and finds forms85. It then begins to process but stops dead at a point. Do you know if there are changes which may make forms85 break this?
Thanks,
Richard
ANSWER: Richard,
Without the exact error that should show, it is hard to definitely answer. However, there are some technical documents available that directly discuss this very topic. You can find the first one in the Domino Wiki.
The second article is a bit older but it walks through establishing an iNotes and reverse proxy architecture. You can read that article. I am guessing that one of the configured attributes in the proxy has changed in version 8.5 and is causing your error.

| EDITING ATTACHMENTS RECEIVED IN 8.5 VIA SMTP |
|
In versions prior to 8.5, you are able to perform many actions on attachments received in email via SMTP. You could edit, save, delete, view, and open them using the program assigned via the operating system. However, this stopped working in 8.5, as noticed by many users.
If you receive an attachment in Lotus Notes 8.5 from an SMTP sender, the ability to edit is now missing from your right-click menu in the client; the option is grayed out. You are also not able to delete the attachments, as you were in releases prior to Notes 8.5. If you right-click on any such message, only Save, View, or Open are available to you as a user.
This baffled me for a while until I finally made a support call after checking, testing, and rechecking everything my team and I could think of. Well you can probably guess the outcome.
This issue is noted and has been assigned SPR# SIWA7HF52V by Lotus. The only current workaround is to save the attachment locally first and then edit. In-place editing just isn't available.

| QUICKTIP: UNABLE TO OPEN REPLICA OF PERSONAL NAB ON SERVER IN NOTES 8.5 STANDARD |
|
In 8.5 (Eclipse), if a user has a replica of his or her local NAB on the server, it is impossible to open it. It will always open the local copy, whether trying from the workspace, database open, or open replica.
Unfortunately, this is a known issue reported under SPR DCHR7S9TLX.
Workarounds at the moment include using a non-mail server or the basic client, as well as opening the hidden views first on the server replica.

| FROM THE IdoNotes MAILBOX: LOTUS TRAVELER AND BATTERY ISSUES IN 8.5.0.1 |
|
QUESTION: We just upgraded our test servers to Domino and Traveler 8.5 and since then, we have been experiencing battery issues on the two devices that we are testing with. We are testing with a Palm Treo and the HTC Pro. Both were working fine with Traveler 8.0.1, but since upgrading to 8.5, the phones will not keep a charge. They die after about 5 hours of use with a full charge.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to extend the battery life on the devices?
Thank you,
Jeffrey
ANSWER: Jeffrey, we also saw this on some test devices before we upgraded everything to the most recent patch levels. While Lotus suggested SMS push as an answer, it does relieve some battery usage but is not preferred over TCP for most enterprises.
